11/27/11 Daybook

Outside my window...

Dark, cold, foggy...  Hopefully that means a good amount of work this week!  I do love the cold weather though.  I know my birthday is in the summer time, and I have always loved the summer, but especially with being pregnant, I am truly enjoying the winter!

I am thankful...

For holiday weekends, photo/text messaging and internet video chats!  I was able to stay home for Thanksgiving, got texted photo messages from my brother while he visited The Happiest Place on Earth and was able to talk to my dad and family in Arizona all in the same day!  I may not be the most computer savvy person in the world but the internet is a pretty amazing thing!

I am thinking about...
Swollen feet!  I understand getting swollen feet on Thanksgiving, I did a lot more standing than I am used to and not enough resting.  I spent a lot of Friday off my feet and with those feet up!  But in an effort to get things done this weekend I have been doing quite a bit of sewing and SOMEHOW am ending up with swollen feet?  I'm not even on my feet, how does that work?

Learning all the time...
The sewing I mentioned...  Yeah, learning that I dislike working with suiting fabrics...  The weave is just too big!  If ever I take on a mammoth project again that involves suiting I fully intend to serge the ends first!  I realize that's even more work, but in the end it's really not!

From the kitchen...
Ha-ha!  So a lot has come out of my kitchen this week!!!  I may not love cooking every single day but holiday cooking is definitely my thing!  Mom made two pumpkin pies on Wednesday (we have two or three slices left!) and I made apple pie on Thursday.  I forgot to look at the recipe and didn't realize the apple took such a long time to "rest" before serving!  That one just barely made the table!!!  We always make potatoes fresh, so I did the washing and peeling and mom cooked 'em up.  Mom made both sweet potatoes and candied yams and of course had a yummy turkey!  Canned cranberries that we found at the very last second, as well as a can of black olives mom missed in the cupboard.  Found green olives in the refrigerator!  Mother-in-law brought the green bean casserole to complete the meal!  OH!  The gravy!!!  So our tradition has been that when I cook, the in-laws like to buy the turkey, I'm totally cool with that and tend to overload them with left-overs!  So, cleaning out the turkey there was the normal bag of "goodies" inside and then an extra bag labeled "gravy."  Now (it might have been last year or the year before) my dad taught me how to make gravy from "scratch."  You know, from the drippings...  Well, that year I had no wine and barely anything good to put in to give the gravy any flavor.  We made it work in the end but I could have done better.  I figured, "Hey, I forgot to think about gravy, so let's try this packet!"  Basically I still used the turkey drippings and added two cups of water, then brought to a boil.  Once boiling add the contents of the bag and keep mixing until we get it back to a boil, then let it sit for a few minutes.  If I do say so myself, it was quite good!  Oh yeah, and we made crescent rolls with dinner at hubby's request.  Ah...  And cornbread stuffing, but that is one thing I tend to make from a box.  Yeah, I know, I have TONS of family that make GREAT stuffing from scratch, why on earth have I not begged for their recipes?  Well, because at the holidays I am more of a dessert kind of girl!  And no one complained eating that boxed stuffing!

I am creating...
A holiday outfit for my Little!  Check out my other blog to check on my status!  I was trying to post every other day with updates but I found that to be a bit of a distraction as opposed to keeping me on task.  I am happy to report that things are coming along well!

I am working on...
Keeping on task!  I have a great habit of getting off track when I do things.  I have been spending a little time each day getting some of my sewing done, a little time reading, a little time playing with my Little girl!  I prefer to do my sewing when Little is down for a nap, or before she gets up or after she goes to bed.  I don't think it's "fair" for her if mommy is hiding out in the sewing room.  Of course then I am also trying to catch up on shows and movies I have recorded and squeezing in some reading time!  That whole getting a schedule down is much harder for mommy than it has been keeping Little on her schedule!

I am going...
Blah...  Back to work this week!  I feel like I haven't been to work in for-ev-er...  Back to the grindstone!  That whole motivation thing fails me and when I'm at work I just keep thinking of all the things I could be doing at home.  Of course, when I'm at home I can't help thinking of all the things I need to do at work!

I am hoping...
To be able to get up in the morning!  I am posting much later than I intended to!!!  At least I got a good amount of rest this weekend.

I am reading...
Blogs, pattern directions, Oz...  I've really tried to read a chapter or two a day from the Oz stories.  Since they are kid stories they go pretty quickly.  I just feel like since I have that NOOK I really should be using it, at least every other day if not daily!  Blogs I can read every single day!  Pattern directions I tend to try to skim and then figure it out on my own but I'm trying to be a good girl.  I've only had to remove one row of stitches due to not reading the pattern correctly, although the coat I am working on may need some adjustments at the collar.  I wasn't paying complete attention and may have put the collar too close to the front of the coat.  We'll see!

I am praying...
Same as before!  Thankful of the daily blessing I have, praying for traveling family and friends, for babies being born and those celebrating birthdays.  Praying for some movement with regards to hubby's job applications and regarding housing situations of those we care about.

I am hearing...
Christmas music.  Clicking keyboards from both my laptop and the computer hubby is on. Fan humming overhead.  Yes, that's right, it's cold outside and the heater is coming on in the house but in the office/sewing room it gets rather warm with a computer running, my sewing machine on and the extra lights I need for sewing, add in two adults and earlier our two sleepy kitties, it's quite the hot-box in here!

Around the house...
Amazingly, the laundry is done.  The dishes are pretty much caught up.  The living room has been picked up of all Little's toys.  The bathrooms are mostly clean.  A few things to be done here and there but overall not bad for a holiday weekend at home!

One of my favorite things...
Pizza Sunday!  Tonight we had a pizza from the grocery store since hubby had a few last-minute items to pick up.  Cheaper to buy a pepperoni pizza and then add my own pineapple!  Little has fully embraced her inner pizza-girl!  Since mommy and daddy met working at a pizza parlor is that any surprise?  She kept saying "PIZZA" until I gave her a slice!  No more cutting it up for her, she dives right into the slice and now even eats the pepperoni and finishes the crust!

A few plans for the rest of the week...
I transfer doctors this week and have two appointments scheduled.  Otherwise just work and sewing on the schedule.  Getting into the count-down stage of this pregnancy.  I really should pack a hospital bag one of these days...

Random thought...
Why do some of us think we are so funny when we talk using mostly movie quotes?  As if coming up with our own one-liners wouldn't be funnier?  I am constantly using movie quotes to describe people or situations, or just because they pop into my overly-full noggin and they make me giggle!  No, really, I will be sitting somewhere and a movie quote POPS right in and I start giggling, and then laughing, out loud!  I don't know if people ever look up to see what I am laughing at...  I just assume everyone knows I'm slightly off!  OH!  Like Elf was on over the weekend!  Now, I know there are a TON of funny quotes from that movie that I can recite at random but the thing that makes me TOTALLY laugh out loud is thinking of the part in the movie where he gets hit by the taxi cab!  I know, I'm totally off!!!  But even now, I am totally laughing!!!

Here are picture thoughts I am sharing with you....

Outside my window...

Dark, cold...  We get a few days of dry weather before the next rain comes.  I tell you though, it is never enough rain for me!!!

I am thankful...

For lazy Sundays...  Sure, we were supposed to get things done today, but the deal was, if the hubby couldn't be up before 9 a.m. then we got to start taking stuff off our to-do list!

I am thinking about...
2012.  I've had that movie on my DVR for months now!  I finally broke down and watched it.  Rather depressing.  I just hope when the end of the world comes and California breaks off into the ocean that I just sleep right through it!

Learning all the time...
Little is getting quite the vocabulary now!  And she is able to answer our questions when we ask "What is that?"  She knows a few letters and some numbers, certain shapes and different everyday items.  Recently we realized she has now started copying what we say.  Yup, we have officially crossed over into the "bad" words!  But mommy & daddy are working on that!

From the kitchen...
Last night hubby and I both made chicken stir-fry!  It took far less time to prepare with both of us cooking, not to mention I had a bunch of the veggies already cut up.  And hubby made sure the "prep work" dishes were getting washed as we went along, so hardly any clean-up at the end of the night!  Mom cooked some beans this week, so we will probably have a chicken-tortilla-casserole with those beans.  Thanksgiving is at home this year for us, so I plan to do a bit more cooking than "normal" this week!

I am creating...
A plan to not procrastinate!  All that by making a dress and coat for my Little for Christmas.  We always got dressed up for the holidays.  I'm pretty sure my mom made a few of my dresses, but I have been hoarding fabric and patterns for years with the idea of making my own daughter some special clothes!  Let's see how that goes, shall we?  I did manage to get about half of the dress cut out.  Not bad considering Little was fighting her nap and mommy gets tired faster now that we're getting closer to the end of this pregnancy.

I am working on...
Getting things done.  I'm sure I've said that a million times, to be followed-up with a million more times!  The fact is, I not only like to stall things out, I like to be a perfectionist at certain things.  I will wait until the last second to do something, then when it doesn't turn out the way I want, it ends up in a "to do later" pile.  So for now I may not be working to make that pile any smaller, I will be trying not to make it any bigger!

I am going...
No where any time soon.  Ah, I've said that before too, haven't I?  We might get to take my nephew out for lunch tomorrow, that would be fun!  Otherwise it's just a lot of getting things done and ready for Thanksgiving.  Maybe get a little sewing done.  That's my big plan!

I am hoping...
That I get my nephew tomorrow.  He's a tough one to pin-down for a date!  Very busy six-year-old, let me tell you!  I used to watch him every Monday the first year he was born.  He's one of the best baby's I ever saw and he has become a much too smart for his years first grader!

I am reading...
Tik-Tok of Oz.  There are 15 Oz stories and I plan to read each and every one of them!  To be honest, I'm not in love with any of them.  Whoever made the movie really took their own creative license on the direction and descriptions that didn't exactly follow the book.  Although I am sure Baum loved revisiting Oz as many times as he did, the stories are a bit...  Well, they're just not that good...  After the 15 stories of Oz I plan to continue on with the Wicked series by Gregory Maguire.  I have read Wicked before and LOVED it!  So I look forward to reading it again, and then following up with his elaborations on the characters in the land of Oz!

I am praying...
Just in general.  I know there are friends and family that are traveling, have health concerns, money concerns, what have you.  And they are never far from my thoughts and prayers.  After watching that movie though (2012) I just want to be thankful for today.  I pray that for as long as possible I have a tomorrow to wake up to so that I can hug my Little and tell her how much I love her!  That's all...

I am hearing...
Clicking keyboard.  Blowing air from the heater.  I think I hear the sports channel in the other room.  Much is quiet in the house this evening, just the way I like it on blog-post nights!

Around the house...
We've been "maintaining" but not well.  Laundry has been creeping up on us and although we got a small start, there is still much to do!  There might only be a nights worth of dishes on the counter, so that's pretty good for us!  Mostly though the rest of the house has stayed clean, so that makes the day run smoother...

One of my favorite things...
Did I mention lazy Sundays?  Although the hubby was supposed to take Little to see her grandparents, we did manage to get some quiet time during the day to get things done when I wanted to.  Nap time still managed to be "off" but after getting a little work done and watching some of my movie, I still got in some cuddle time with my favorite girl!

A few plans for the rest of the week...
Hopefully a date with my nephew and lot's of cooking and baking for Thanksgiving!  I am not all that gung-ho about the things other people eat on Thanksgiving.  If I've got some turkey, gravy and potatoes I'm a pretty happy camper!  Through in some pie (it's the only time I eat pie) and we've got a girl ready for another year!  I do like Thanksgiving though, it makes my house feel all warm and cozy with lots of yummy smells!

Random thought...
Does anyone else think it's funny to watch a movie in another language?  Yes, I know I'm a dork...  But sometimes, it's funny to watch a movie, especially a cartoon where you can't just read lips, and you don't understand what they are saying, but you are still laughing?  Okay, so maybe that's just me...

Here are picture thoughts I am sharing with you....
Not exactly recent, but I just can't get enough of her face!  Even when she is just being funny!!!

My Very Best Friend...

So, I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but my "little" brother will be leaving the first week of January for the Army.  I am very proud of him, and I will miss him terribly.
D and I are not quite thirteen months apart.  For many years growing up we were asked if we were twins.  I don't have many childhood memories that he's not a part of.  Don't get me wrong, I have many memories of us fighting like cats and dogs, but around our teenage years we were able to become great friends, best friends...  There's not much I wouldn't do for him and he has been there for me more times than I can count, or probably remember.  My Grandma has told me over the years that in our early days together I would boss the poor kid around something fierce.  Hmmm, yeah, that sounds like me!  No matter how many times we moved, no matter what we did, we were together.  In High School I would make him dance with my friends at school dances.  We worked together for years at a local pizza parlor.  We even lived together for a couple years after he graduated!  I would be asked all the time if we were real brother and sister.  People would question whether we had the same mom and dad.  Well, without any medical testing, according to our birth certificates we do!  Even at times, as grown-ups, that we have lived apart we have always stayed close.
I can't imagine anyone in the world that I just know as well as my own brother.  I know how he thinks, I know what he's feeling.  We're the oddest set of "twins" you could ever meet.
So how am I doing dealing with the idea of his leaving?  I am not thinking about it as much as possible...  Don't get me wrong, I fully support the decisions by brother makes.  The most important thing to me is that he is happy and healthy.  I'm not counting down to the saddest day of my life, I am trying to be happy for his newest adventure.  But that's difficult to do when I think about the fact that I can't call him whenever I want.  For the last six years we have worked together for my dad's company.  I talk to him every...  single...  day.  Sure, we have our moments, we are siblings...  And sometimes I get annoyed that he will call me on his drive from one job to the other, just so he is doing something, but I will miss even that when he is gone.  When it's five o'clock and he is driving from somewhere in the East Bay (over the hill) to get home in time for dinner or to see his son's game or practice and he's talking my ear off about whatever he can think of so that his "commute" isn't quite so lonely.  What will he do without me?  What will I do without him?  He listens much better than I do.  He rarely tries to offer up advise that he knows I won't follow, unless asked...  I feel like I'm a bad sister, like I don't listen enough, like I'm not there for him the way he is always there for me.  I've always been the one that offers the unwanted advise.  I've tried to just listen, to not need to hear myself so much.
But I'm going to miss him.  A lot.  And he's not as good at picking up the phone when he's not making a lonely commute.  He doesn't do email so well.  I've known him almost my whole life, all of his...  There is no one that knows me better than he does.  And I doubt anyone will ever know me like he does.
I'm going to be the "big" sister though.  I'm going to be the tough-ass that he knows me to be.  The one that might cry in front of him, but that is hard as stone around everyone else.  I will keep that stiff-upper-lip and show my support and be proud of him when I have to say good-bye.
And he will always be my best friend...

11/13/11 Daybook

Outside my window...

Cold and dark, just the way I like it!  Of course, it's still not cold enough.  Work hasn't picked up as much as I like but I'm not complaining!  I'm just wishing some of the other states that have been hogging all the "good" weather might send some of it out the Cali way!

I am thankful...

For my wonderful Terra!!!  Got to see my long-time friend and her family, that I adore!!!  I am thankful that she is still friends with me after all these years.  Whenever I see her I feel like she lets me talk and talk and I come home feeling like I didn't get enough time to hear about her day-to-day.  I am thankful she still loves me even if I am such a talker!!!

I am thinking about...
Facebook debates.  Somehow even the most random post ends up being a debate of freedom of speech.  The fact is, we are all allowed our opinions.  If you plan to argue it out  because you are waiting for others to tell you that you are right, then you might as well hold your breath and bang your head against a wall.  I don't "argue" to make someone think the way I do, I just work in an office where I am by myself.  I tend to be a little anti-social, and I have a one-year-old.  Good-ole growed-up conversations are far and few between, so every once in a while I jump into a conversation I don't need to "win" simply to get my brain going.

Learning all the time...
Learning to listen to my inner voice just like I used to!  I've always prided myself on my ability to not only "read" people, but to have good intuition.  I think we get so nervous to do something "wrong" that we try every other option before going with our gut!  My guts might be gross-looking but they are usually pretty spot on, so I am learning to doubt myself less.

From the kitchen...
Hubby got a great deal on chicken last week, so we've been doing a lot of that!  Tonight though, a $7 pizza from Mountain Mike's.  The kitchen is clean and the dishes are done, pizza sounded wonderful!

I am creating...
Wish I was creating something!  I've been overtaken once again by the "clean-up" crew!  Had a Holiday Boutique at my house last weekend that didn't do so well, but got my butt in gear to get the house cleaned.  Unfortunately while most of the house is clean, a few of the rooms got the "carryover" until we had more time to get to things.  Hence the takeover in my sewing room.  Hopefully this week will see the final relocation of those items and some productivity happening in the sewing room.

I am working on...
Keeping my head together while we go for round two with gestational diabetes tests!  Yes, that's right, the good news I had a few weeks ago dissapointingly crashed into reality when a regular test showed too much sugar, again!  Had a one-hour blood test last week, yes I got to drink that oh-so yummy glucose drink for the fourth time this pregnancy!  Test came back high again, so now I get to go in for another 3 hour test and one more chance to drink that drink!  What can a girl do?  I have less than two months till this next baby arrives, I am just thankful that if I do get diabetes, I am only getting it this late in the pregnancy and haven't had to deal with the daily testing so far.

I am going...
To work, to my three-hour blood draw, to maybe get some sewing done?  No plans to travel this next week.  Maybe I will sit down and get something planned out for our Thanksgiving at home?

I am hoping...
For some super cold weather!  I know, I should be hoping not to get diabetes, but to be honest, I just don't care that much!  I was able to control my blood sugar without insulin during my last pregnancy, and it made me do more exercise.  I know, the last trimester, especially the last month, no mommy-to-be wants to be focusing on exercise, but I contribute my quick bounce-back to work thanks to being in better shape before I gave birth!  So, I really should have been doing more from the beginning, I just got a little lazy...

I am reading...
Finished Wizard of Oz, now reading the next in the series...  Although the name of it has slipped my mind!  Some story with Jack Pumpkinhead.  Scarecrow has a roll but I'm not loving the book.  I'm not sure if Oz was such an acclaimed book prior to the movie, but this second story is coming off a bit forced.  I've read a few series books, Stephen King's Dark Tower is a series that spans almost King's whole lifetime, and while the ending of the final book did not sit well with some, I loved the entire series and plan to read the books again and again!

I am praying...
For a friend having a hard time with her pregnancy, for another that could go into labor any day now, and for the friends and family that are "trying" and those that will be "hatching" in the near future!  Also for patience and tolerance for myself and for others.  I don't know that the times we live in are any more "trying" than any other generation but I feel like we have more followers and less moral leaders.

I am hearing...
Donald Trump (ahhh!!!) hosting a show called Curiosity.  Although I dislike The Trump, the show itself has been actually interesting.  The episode "What's America Worth" has covered everything from how much we waste vs. can make when it comes to recycling (showed metal and food) products that have saved America, from wheels on luggage to bullet-proof vests and then tells us what it's all worth at the end of the day.  Honestly, for all worthless people out there complaining about what they don't have, there is a lot out there that America is actually producing.

Around the house...
Keeping up with the chores, catching up on the DVR...

One of my favorite things...
Online debates on Facebook...  Even with people I don't know...

A few plans for the rest of the week...
Work, doctor appointment for blood draw, stuff around the house.

Random thought...
What is up with all these t.v. shows about fairy tales?

Here are picture thoughts I am sharing with you....

Freedom is Not Free

Freedom Is Not Free

I watched the flag pass by one day
It fluttered in the breeze
A young marine saluted it
... ... And then he stood at ease

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd

I wondered how many men like him
Have fallen through the years?
How many died on foreign soil?
How many Mother's tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, Freedom is not Free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill

I wondered just how many times
Taps had meant "Amen"
When a flag had covered a coffin
Of a brother or a friend

I thought of all the children
of the Mothers and the Wives
Of Fathers, Sons, and Husbands
With interrupted lives

And I thought about the graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington
No, Freedom is not Free.

written by Kelly Strong

I woke up this morning (at around 2 a.m.) with my head full of another thought.  I lay awake in bed thinking out an entire blog post, and it had nothing to do with Veteran's Day.  It had to do with me thinking people are sheep (look forward to that one!) and then I thought more on it and realized I would just be one in the "heard" if I posted about something so selfish.  I read a poem (above) that a friend posted on Facebook, and I found it much more appropriate for today.  I have family and friends that have served and are serving our country.  I am proud to know (or have known) them and support troops far and wide for their sacrifices.
Perhaps today we could look past the "drama" and silliness of our own lives, and the lives of those the media force-feed on us, and spend a little time to reflect on what it truly means to be in the service, to give your all, to be an American.  In today's world, it is hard to see the positive in our daily lives.  That does not mean we should be miserable, that we should live without honor.  The idea of "paying it forward" is something that any service person has actually lived out and not only do we take that for granted, we take our own freedoms and lifestyles for granted.  I may not have a lot in this world, but what I have is mine, and I am grateful.
I am grateful for all those that are willing to put everything they have on the line for myself, for my family, for my freedoms.
